Subluxation is the most subtle and common of spinal problems – eventually leading to major issues. It occurs when too many stressors on the spine cause one or more joints to become dysfunctional or to fixate in place.
Subluxation affects the nerves that the spine is meant to protect. Usually the problem is silent for years – like a cavity before it starts causing pain. Given time, the irritation to the spinal nerves will pass the symptoms threshold - causing muscle spasm, stiffness, pain, numbness, tingling, or organ problems. The spinal nerves control virtually your entire body.
Subluxation also leads to break down of the affected joints and the intervertebral discs. See the section on degenerative disc disease (DDD) and degenerative joint disease (DJD) for more information.
Although major traumas, like car accidents or falls cause this problem, the little stressors of daily life cause the majority: poor posture, poor diet, mental stress, repetitive activities, etc. It all adds up. Virtually everyone will develop this issue to one degree or another.
Only a chiropractor is trained to find and reduce subluxation. Simple lifestyle changes can help decrease their reoccurrence. Regular spinal checkups are just as important as regular dental checkups.
